Sometimes doing it yourself doesn’t make a lot of sense.
While making your own pizza dough or pizza sauce is something you can do, it may not pay to try to fashion your own pizza stone.
Here’s why: You want a pizza stone so you can make better tasting pizza at home.
A pizza stone can get you there. Stone and brick hold the heat and create a unique crust that cannot be replicated in a regular oven. A pizza stone works by pulling the moisture out of the dough making a crisp crust. Commercial pizza stones do this but if you are a person who wants to do it yourself couldn’t you just buy an unglazed ceramic tile at the lumber yard and be done with hit.
The answer is that you could. But if you do you need to be very careful. You will need to find an unglazed ceramic tile. Glazed tiles contain lead, which you don’t want touching your food so you have to be sure that the tile you choose is not glazed. Also you have to make sure that the size of the tile you choose will hold a pizza. They may well be too small. Finally, you need to make sure that the tile will hold up in the oven so you need to be sure that the tile is at lease half an inch thick.
Soapstone Pizza Stones are a safer and much better option!
When you consider all the possible pitfalls, it seems to make more sense to spend the few extra dollars and buy a safe professional pizza stone from a reliable manufacturer.
